Day 5: Jacob's trip -- San Diego Zoo Part 2

Tuesday, June 4, 2019

We were up and at 'em early for our second day at the zoo. The day was overcast and cool but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm.

The Australian outback was our first area of exploration.

Checking out koalas.

Climbing with the koalas

Close up of one who was awake.

But most were taking naps, like this one (awwww).

A kookaburra

Had to climb even higher.
When we were here in 1997, they had just had an albino koala born at the zoo. We got to see him (barely). We inquired as to what had happened to him and were told that he had died. No reason given.  Sad.

At a small aquarium that had leopard sharks in it.

A koi pond.
Tasmanian devil.

A life size extinct bird.
And ... he had to stand up. It was a challenge on all the sculptures.

We spent a lot of time at this display. There was a young orangutan who wanted to play with the baby Siamong ... and the baby wanted to cling to him instead of his mother. Then the big daddy orangutan started chasing the young one. I'll post a video of it later.
Here's the baby hanging from the arm of the young orangutan.

Daddy and Mommy orangutan.

The baby crawling on the young one.

Momma took her child back, and the youngster is not happy.

He tries to feed the baby some leaves (so cute!)

Baby is nursing.

Another display at which we spent a lot of time was the baboon display. They had some family shenanigans, too. I'll post video later.

Here's a baby clinging to its mother.

Look at my beautiful hair.

And even the gorillas posed sweetly.

I'm always fascinated by birds -- especially colorful ones and large ones.

The text on the sign seems appropriate here.

Looks like he's about to leap.

Lots of jacarandas.

Looking at Jacob through the glass.

It's hiding.

Another beautiful bird.

A black leopard. Got a cute video of it, too.

Another entertaining display -- the lemurs.

Ring tailed lemurs.

Playing "king of the mountain"

Jacob's favorite animal -- the penguins.

Ready to nap.

Jacob gave me the idea for this photo.

These two apes are brother (black) and sister (blonde).

Bear enclosure.

Here's their names.

Jacob captured a great picture of the cheetah.
This one was on top of a "cave."

So stunning!

Huge porcupines.

Lunch time!

Okay, the rest of the photographs may not be in order ... but it gives you a good idea of how big and diverse the zoo is.
Checking out the giraffes.

Baby giraffe sitting down.

Getting lunch.

Wart hog.

Weird headed birds.

His favorite activity -- climbing on the sculptures!

Mama lion. Daddy was behind a rock.

Manny! the mammoth

Some extinct cat.

Not an extinct cat.

Capybara and tapir

Llama

Elephant feeding himself.

Jump! and I got it!

Secretary bird.

More jumping!

Just liked this foliage.

On top of a dire wolf.

Guess what day it is?.... He's tired of the joke!

Vulture

Meerkat

Checking the map

Churro time!

King of the jungle ... and a lion.

And our last challenge.

Miles walked: 5.2

Blisters: 1

Tomorrow we will check out the Wildlife Safari Park in Escondido.
