Day 3: Jacob's trip -- The border and Old Town
Saturday, June 2, 2019
Today our goal was to go to the International Border at San Ysidro. Although we'd only been 5 miles away yesterday, we decided to take the trolley from San Diego down, which would take about 45 minutes on the Blue Line. It was a bit of a walk to get to the Blue Line station (.8 miles).
Jacob kept himself amused on the train. He said he felt like it was only about 20 minutes.
When we got to San Ysidro we hopped off and headed across the tracks to the McDonald's. Jake's favorite drink is sweet iced tea ... and they had it there! Not many places in California have it. So we got him a LARGE drink and some fries.
We found the pedestrian walkway over to the outlet mall and as we made our way over, we saw the border entrance to Mexico. That's Tijuana in the background.
Behind us is "THE WALL." We're in the parking lot of the outlet mall.
Jacob decided we'd have lunch at Carl's Jr. Then we went shopping He got two pair of shoes and two pair of socks. The boy is a clothes horse.
Here are the Vans he bought (wearing his new Gumby and Pokey socks).
He also got some Nike slides.
On our way back, I had Jacob pose by this sign.
This is how I felt when we got back on the train. The boy wore me out.
Here's how I really looked -- windblown and everything.
This is the trolley security checking for tickets. We saw one guy "kicked" off in San Diego. 12 and under are free on weekends.
On the way back, we saw four Navy helicopters flying above the Navy base.
It was an enjoyable trip. On the way back, we hopped off at Petco Park and transferred to the green line so it wasn't as far a walk back. We rested up for a couple hours, then left to go to Old Town.
Here are the trolley tracks for the Green line which would go down to Petco Park.
Jacob patiently waiting at the station.
He wanted to make sure he looked stylish.
Jacob nudged me when he saw Boppa talking to a stranger.
We call it "making Boppa's new best friend." This guy was
coming back from the Padres game (they were losing 7-0 to the Marlins).
The Old Town stop was about 5 stops north of us. It was a short walk to the park itself. More information.
It had some beautiful flowers. This was over a bar.
This is the restaurant at which we ate. "Casa de Reyes". All outdoors.
The female wait staff were all dressed in old Mexican garb. The men had on white shirts, black pants, and a red scarf around their waists.
This was my meal -- 3 selection combo. Beef tamale, chicken enchilada, cheese enchilada, rice and beans.
And accompanied by a premium margarita.
Jacob enjoying the outdoor dining.
After we ate, we walked around the park to see some of the buildings. Unfortunately all the museums were already closed.
Jacob jumped up the steps of the old hotel.
Carriage.
Apparently it was quite cosmopolitan in its day.
The lively section of Old Town.
I asked Jacob if he knew what this was. He did.
Paul has this blanket!
As we left the park, this little bunny ran in front of us. Spooky eyes, huh?
The ride back was quick and uneventful. When we got back to the hotel, I checked the miles we walked that day: 5.2 miles.
